Under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) Operational Programme for the seafood sector, Minister for Agriculture Food and the Marine, Michael Creed today (Monday, April 23) announced the award of €4,863,643 in grants to 26 seafood enterprises and three research institutions in 11 different counties.
The grant awards will support a total investment of €13m into applied research and marketing in the aquaculture and seafood-processing sectors and will be co-funded by the Irish Government and the European Union and subject to terms and conditions.
“It is very encouraging to see 15 capital investments in aquaculture underway, together with three significant research projects,” said Minister Creed. “These are precisely the types of investments we need to see coming forward as they can positively contribute towards achievement of our growth plans for the aquaculture sector in the coming years.”
The importance of continued investment and its positive impact on Irish fishing fleets was also highlighted by Minister Creed. “Increased investment in value-added products in our seafood-processing industries improves the competitiveness of those companies and increases the returns to our fishing fleet. Supported by Bord Iascaigh na Mhara (BIM), these ambitious seafood enterprises are identifying and taking advantage of growth opportunities.”
