Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney, has congratulated Irish trainers and winners on a successful opening day of the Cheltenham festival, as Irish trainer Willie Mullins bagged an astonishing four wins in the Supreme Novices Hurdle, the Arkle Challenge Trophy, the Champion Hurdle and the Mares Hurdle.

First Round statistics show a fall in applications for agriculture courses.


Over 74,000 students applied for college places via the CAO this year. The figures show strong growth in areas of built environment, architecture, engineering and technology, as well as law and dentistry. CAO preliminary data indicates a decline in overall demand for agriculture third-level courses of approximately 7 per cent, with a decline in first preferences of 18.9 per cent.
