The abolition of the European milk quota system in 2015 paved the way for farms to expand production. The Irish Farmers' Association (IFA) has predicted a €106m underspend in the Rural Development Programme 2014-2020. President of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA), Joe Healy, said that it is clear that while some schemes will spend most of their allocation, there will, inevitably, be underspends in other schemes by its completion date.
Vice-president of the European Parliament and MEP, Mairead McGuinness, has voiced concern over US tariffs on European food exports, following the imposition of a 17 per cent customs duty on Spanish olives in recent days. Ms McGuinness, who is a member of the Parliament's Agriculture Committee, voted in favour of a parliamentary resolution urging the Commission to investigate the issue and react appropriately.
