A balanced approach to life and farming

 

As the winner of the 2017 FBD Young Farmer of the Year Award, PJ O’Keeffe represents a new generation with a balanced approach to life and farming. Tomas Turley, on the other hand, has just retired from Teagasc after completing a 34-year career in the advisory services. Both men spoke to Matt O’Keeffe and shared some thoughts on the state of Irish agriculture.

Representatives from the Irish Farmers' Association, Irish Creamery Milk Supplier Association, the Irish Cattle & Sheep Farmers' Association and Macra na Feirme will appear before the Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine today, (Tuesday, September 13).

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine's Knowledge Transfer Programme has been welcomed by Macra na Feirme but the organisation says concerns relating to the exclusion of young farmers who do not have a herd number need to be addressed immediately.

Macra calls for fully-resourced Basic Payment National Reserve

 

Ahead of this year’s annual agricultural conference (Friday, October 28 to Monday, October 31), Macra national president, Sean Finan, has called for a fully-resourced Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) National Reserve for 2017 to be made available for young farmers and new entrants to farming.

Macra na Feirme launched its annual Green Ribbon campaign for the month of May at the National AGM, which took place recently in Nenagh Co. Tipperary. See Change, the National Stigma Reduction Partnership and partner organisations, including Macra na Feirme, are rolling out a month-long national Green Ribbon campaign to get people talking openly about mental health problems.

Macra urges minimal change to Irish ice cream

 

Macra na Feirme has called on the Minister of State for Health Promotion, Marcella Corcoran Kennedy, to ensure the milk content of Irish ice cream is protected. The Minister has instigated a review via public consultation of the 1952 regulation that governs the milk and sugar content requirements in ice cream.
