The dual All-Ireland winning players were at Kilcloon National School in Co. Meath where they spoke about the importance of fruit and vegetables in their diet on the way to back-to-back titles.
The Incredible Edibles programme provides schools with free fruit and vegetable growing kits. The children get a hands-on experience of growing and eating their own food while learning all about how food gets to their plates.
Agri Aware’s healthy eating and growing programme is entering its fifteenth year, celebrated by Ireland’s best fifteen at the launch.
Over half a million schoolchildren have taken part in Incredible Edibles since its inception and places on the curriculum-linked programme are limited to 1800 schools.
Those primary schools across Ireland that wish to take part can sign up for free here. Places are limited and the first 250 schools to put their names down will get a free gift.
On their food journey, the schoolchildren will take part in five tasks. They learn all about where their food comes from, identifying Irish produce, how to plant and grow food, and how to prepare the food they have harvested, creating tasty meals.
As part of the project, schools also take part in Healthy Eating Week in early May, where they are challenged to eat ‘seven-a-day’ for the week.
Incredible Edibles enjoys brilliant industry support with 16 sponsors in all helping to bring the project to life in schools across the country.
Alan Jagoe Chairman of Agri Aware said: “It was absolutely brilliant to have the Meath Ladies help to launch the Agri Aware Incredible Edibles programme in schools. Our Incredible Edibles programme is our longest-running and like the fruit and vegetables every year, it continues to grow. It is great to see the children getting stuck into one of our schools’ programmes in such a practical way and hopefully it can lay the foundations for a healthy lifestyle and a positive relationship with Irish-grown food for the rest of their lives.”
