Bird manure as a fertiliser option is far from being a new concept.
It has been used over the centuries, especially in regions where subsistence farming was the norm and bird manure was widely accessible and free to use. A South African company is now developing the commercial potential of this ancient fertiliser. GuanoBoost – founded in 2018 by two lifelong friends, Johan and Theo and Irishman Stephen Duggan – is the name given to the product and it is already in widespread use in South Africa as well as across other regions of southern Africa. It could offer an alternative to our current high NPK input grass-production model and we will provide an in-depth report on the product and its potential in an Irish context in next month’s Irish Farmers Monthly.
