Buoyed by the recent developments in relation to Mercosur, the Irish Farmers’ Association, still had plenty of protest in the tank.
Members of the IFA at the doors of Bord Bia’s office.

And they took that protest to the doors of Bord Bia to call for the resignation of its chair Larry Murrin, who also heads up Dawn Farms. The meat company has been the focus of negative attention since it emerged that it had imported Brazilian beef - 1 per cent - for use in some of its products. The IFA, supported by other farming organisations including the ICMSA, the ICSA, are not backing down in their demand for Murrin to go, despite support for him from Minister Martin Heydon, and the board of Bord Bia. The story has been twisting and turning since Dawn Farms’ Brazilian beef headache started in the middle of January. At the time of print, the IFA had issued a statement in which its deputy president, Alice Doyle said: “If Mr Murrin knows anything about leadership, he will know that putting yourself ahead of your organisation is the worst form of leadership.” All eyes are focussed on who wins the leadership race in this particular battle.
