A four-strong team of Teagasc students represented Ireland for the first time at the European Agro Challenge competition held in Slovakia last month.
Pitted against 17 other teams from across Europe, the Irish were placed tenth overall, with silver and bronze medals in several categories. The team, consisting of two students from Kildalton College and two from Gurteen Agricultural College, won a silver medal in tractor-driving skills, as well as bronze awards in hand milking, changing blades on a disc mower as well as log splitting. Eighteen skills were tested over the two-day competition. Students Ellen Doherty and Conor Farrell, both attending Teagasc Kildalton Agricultural College, and Wayne Smith and Rosie O’Brien, students in Gurteen College, were the Irish representatives.
