Helping farmers tackle  heat stress in cows

Brett Martin Ltd, Europe’s largest producer of daylight roof sheeting has launched a polycarbonate roofing material.
Dairy farmer, George Bingham.

This, according to the company, provides elevated levels of daylight but can also reduce the build-up of heat in dairy buildings, bringing advantages over traditional roofing materials.

Marlon CST Heatguard is the original daylight dairy-roofing system, which has been growing in popularity with Irish farmers searching for solutions to combat the growing challenge of heat stress in dairy herds which can cause reduced milk yield and lower fertility rates which impact the commercial performance directly. George Bingham from Co. Antrim milks almost 900 cows and says he is convinced that the Marlon CST roof has made a difference to his dairy. “Our experience has been exceptional. Since we installed that roof, conception rates are better, yields are up, and the cows are healthier. It is a gamechanger within livestock building design. The cows are just far happier, and their hide is in a great condition, which is a sign of good natural light and ventilation. We also save money because we are using a lot less electricity on lighting. We have now completed a second Marlon roof when converting a silo into a calf shed.”
